16-year-old Carla Hamamjian from the Armenian Newsroom reports on Armenia’s growing partnership with the FIA

Armenia is expanding its cooperation with Formula One’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), to develop motorsports and tourism, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for young drivers.

In late February, Armenia’s economy minister Gevorg Papoyan met with FIA secretary general for sport Valerio Iachizzi in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, to discuss prospects for cooperation and investment.

According to Armenia’s Ministry of Economy, the talks focused on organising motorsport events, attracting international visitors and raising Armenia’s profile in global sport.

The visit also highlighted Armenia’s participation in the FIA Affordable Cross Car project, an initiative designed to lower barriers to entry into motorsport. The programme enables countries to build simple, low-cost racing vehicles using locally available materials, making the sport more accessible to young drivers.

Armenia is among the newest countries to join the programme. Specialists from the Automobile Federation of Armenia have already built a prototype cross car, intended for entry-level competitions such as off-road and rallycross events.

Officials hope that the initiative will foster a stronger motorsport culture in Armenia and create new paths for the next generation of drivers.

It may also encourage young people to study engineering, mechanics and automotive technology.

Officials argue that developing motorsport could bring broader economic benefits, including increased tourism, job creation and investment in infrastructure.

During the visit, both sides emphasised the importance of long-term cooperation. The FIA delegation also met with Arayik Harutyunyan, chief of staff to the prime minister, to discuss further collaboration.
